Has an uninvited guest visited your sweater stash? Mend moth holes or snags in a groovy way! Rather than discarding damaged wool garments or accessories, elevate them through needle felted mending! Create a decorative motif for a patch such as, a heart, flower, leaf, or mushroom. Or, how about repeated polka dots? Maybe you'd rather a geometric shape, or abstract blobs. You choose! Select colours to blend in, or stand out! 

Suitable for beginners, this technique has countless creative possibilities! Demonstrations of the basic needle felting techniques will take place throughout the workshop. Leave with a one of a kind, renewed garment or accessory! Worth noting: this technique can be used on intact items (without holes or snags), simply as embellishment, or to cover a small stain!

If you would like to continue wild acts of creation at home, needle felting tools will be available for purchase after the workshop.

Bring an item made from 100% wool, or wool/synthetic blend (with mostly wool fibres). No cotton garments, please. The wool fibres of the knitted item will integrate with the wool fibres of the patch to create a strong, soft fabric.

DESCRIPTION

In this one day workshop, you will complete this stunning panel with a hummingbird bevel cluster. Push your current skills to learn patterning and the method behind the design, creating a 10.5” circular panel. 

The hummingbird bevel cluster and pattern are included in this class; however, each student will be responsible for their own materials. Please feel free to bring your own glass, foil, and solder, or they are available for purchase from the Centre the day of the workshop. All chemicals and hand tools are included. 

Prerequisite: Beginner Intensive graduate or experience in successfully scoring and breaking glass, grinding to a pattern, foiling ,and soldering.

DESCRIPTION

Kinusaiga is a modern Japanese art form that creates a textured 3 dimensional picture using scraps of fabric. This no-sew fabric art allows you to explore your creative ideas without having to know how to use a sewing machine.

In this class you will learn to interpret a landscape of your choice using Kinusaiga. Landscapes are a staple of the art repertoire and this is a great medium to explore; colour, pattern and texture, and how it relates to your image. Compile a palette from the vast collection of fabric remnants here at GB Arts, interpret your image as a contour drawing and prepare your panel. Then it's down to the hard work of constructing your landscape. This meditative art form gives you the time to explore the relationship between colour, form and texture, refining your image as you go. What a great way to make art.

Your finished project will be fixed in a frame ready to hang when you get home.

The finished picture will be 12" x 16"

DESCRIPTION

This one day introductory class is for those who are absolute beginners. You will learn the very basics of throwing on the potter's wheel. This is a fun and quick way to introduce yourself to throwing on the wheel and find out if you would like to pursue a 5 week introductory course. Three pieces will be saved to be bisque fired and glaze fired. Your pieces will be ready for pick up in 2 to 3 weeks or shipped to you for a fee.

How nice would it be to decorate your Christmas tree with handmade glass ornaments?

In this Sunday morning class you will design and construct 3 sparkling glass ornaments that you can keep or gift to a loved one. You will add surface decoration with; coloured enamels, fritts and iridescent dichroic glass to make your decorations pop.

Completed pieces will be fired in the kiln and be ready in the following week.. 

No prior experience is necessary this is a great beginner class for aspiring glass artists.

Finished ornaments will measure 3x3 and you will make 3.

My passion for art bloomed early as I observed and joined my father while he was painting on canvasses and framing paintings. I was introduced to stained glass art, in High School, which I delved into and worked with for over two decades. Upon moving to Toronto in 1989, I met a life long friend who also worked in stained glass and then fused glass. She introduced me to glass fusing and ever since then, I have worked solely with fused glass, spanning the next three decades. 

Finding peace and happiness in glass creation and teaching others about glass, has no limit and can be pushed beyond imagination. Light, shape and colour are the hooks that make this medium so wonderful to work with.

DESCRIPTION

This five session course will start you on your journey to becoming a potter. You will learn clay preparation, tools, centering clay, opening a vessel, control of the clay on the wheel, and basic finishing of your piece. This course will reinforce these basic skills with the aim to throw a perfect cylinder, which is the beginning of most wheel projects. Good studio practices and a solid technique will give a firm grasp of these beginner clay techniques.

A maximum of 5 pieces will be saved and fired.

Mentored studio will be available after this class to continue practicing your new skills.

This class is a prerequisite for Clay 2, which is followed by Clay 3.

Just in time for Hallowe'en, it's a monster mash!

With just a few basic tools and some wool fibres, create a magnificent needle felted monster! Demonstrations of the basic needle felting techniques will take place throughout the workshop. There's so much room for creativity with this project! You could add horns, or antennae... fangs, or floppy ears... one eye, or three! Hmmm... horrid, or humorous? Needle felting tools will be available for purchase after the workshop, if you would like to add details to your monster at home!

3-Day Intermediate Jewellery Making Workshop

Ready to build on your basic jewellery-making skills? This three-day workshop is designed for students who have completed a beginner course or have some experience at the bench. Through a series of projects, you’ll expand your fabrication skills and explore more advanced techniques while creating unique pieces in sterling silver, copper, and brass.

Techniques may include:

* Advanced soldering

* Layering and mixed metals

* Riveting and cold connections

* Forming and shaping

* Texture and surface treatments

* Finishing and polishing

Students will leave with several completed pieces, increased confidence at the bench, and a broader jewellery-making skill set. All tools and materials are provided. 

Students that have completed this course will be eligible for full open studio privledges in the jewelry studio at GB Arts.

For over 10 years Shannon has been a faculty member of the Jewellery Arts program at Haliburton School of Art and Design (HSAD).

Attention, This is an offsite workshop being held at the
​River Valley Golf & Country Club in St. Marys Ont. near London Ontario

In south western Ontario we are fortunate to have an abundance of rural pastures and woodlands to paint. The seasonal changes give us an opportunity to work with very diverse colour palettes that range from stark white in the winter to warm harvest hues in the fall. In this class Kim Atlin will help you refine your approach to representing fall landscapes. Exercises focusing on composition and atmospheric perspective and a little colour theory in the morning will lead you into a painting in the afternoon that will put all of your new skills into play. This is a class that any painter can benefit from, sign up and focus on the most colourful season of all.

Your class fee includes a lunch, coffee and snacks for break times.

A serger is an extremely useful machine for most sewing projects, but with its complicated threading mechanisms, it can be a little intimidating. Join this afternoon workshop to familiarize yourself with your serger. From threading to different types of edging, this workshop will take the mystery out of using a serger for a wide variety of sewing projects. Participants will complete a set of four rolled-hem napkins by the end of the workshop.

Participants will need: 6, 12" squares of cotton or linen woven fabric for napkins, 3 spools of matching serger thread.

GB Arts will provide scrap woven and knit fabrics for practice serging.

To get the most from this workshop, please make sure your serger is threaded and working before attending. If you need help threading your serger, please arrive half an hour early. Bring your manual and serger tools if you have them.

If you don't have a serger but want to learn, let us know and you can borrow one of ours!

In another life, Patricia was a full-time costumer for some of the big Canadian theatre companies, including the Canadian Stage Company, the Canadian Opera Company, Livent and Mirvish, where she made costumes for shows such as The Lion King, Phantom of the Opera, Ragtime and Mamma Mia. Since that time, she has been an instructor at Wilfrid Laurier University and the University of Waterloo. She has kept up her professional-level sewing skills over the years and is now the owner and operator of Sydenham Sewing and Alterations based in Chatsworth.
