You will work on your own printing project using the GB Arts presses and equipment. Instruction is not part of this Print Club session. Paper and lino will be available for purchase.

DESCRIPTION

This 3-day intensive pottery launchpad is the perfect introduction to hand building with clay.

Learn how to construct bowls, drinking vessels and boxes under the guidance of Heather Dynes Smit an accomplished potter with an impressive portfolio. In this 3 afternoon course you will spend 2 classes building specific forms with clay (coffee mug, bowl, lidded box) and the third class glazing and decorating the pieces. Heather will teach you how to build your own tools and forms as part of this workshop. This will allow you to build a personalized style that you can replicate and grow with.

This class is a prerequisite for possible admittance to open studio at GB Arts as a hand builder.

All pieces made during class will be glazed and ready for pick up within 2 weeks. 

4 pieces will be included with your course, additional pieces will cost $10 (+tax) each for firing and glazing. Some size restrictions will apply.

Vibrant greens, golden hues and crisp blues are hallmarks of summer paintings. How do you represent the vast array of values for these colours? Kim Atlin will give you some colour and value mixing exercises that will help you bring your painting to life. Represent the beautiful Grey/Bruce summer landscapes with confidence after taking this class.

Suitable for beginners to advanced painters. Come with a sense of adventure willing to push your boundaries and develop a unique voice for your painting.

DESCRIPTION

Kinusaiga is a modern Japanese art form that creates a textured 3 dimensional picture using scraps of fabric. Patti DiFlorio will teach you this meditative past time and then unleash you on the vast collection of fabric remnants here at GB Arts. Prepare your panel and choose your palette of colourful fabrics and then get to work. The benefit of this no-sew fabric art is that you can explore your creative ideas without having to know how to use a sewing machine.

Your finished sunflower projects will be fixed in a frame ready to hang when you get home.

The finished picture will be 8" x 8"

Pinch, slab, and coil a lump of clay into a seasonal pumpkin masterpieces! You will create one large pumpkin that will be fired in time for thanksgiving. You can "Jack-O-lantern" your pumpkins if you dare.

Choose a solid colour from our glaze selection or underglaze your pieces and we will finish them with a transparent glaze.

Pumpkins will be ready to pick up in 2 to 3 weeks after completely drying and a bisque firing and glaze firing.

This class is designed for all levels of pottery students.

DESCRIPTION

This five session course will start you on your journey to becoming a potter. You will learn clay preparation, tools, centering clay, opening a vessel, control of the clay on the wheel, and basic finishing of your piece. This course will reinforce these basic skills with the aim to throw a perfect cylinder, which is the beginning of most wheel projects. Good studio practices and a solid technique will give a firm grasp of these beginner clay techniques.

A maximum of 5 pieces will be saved and fired.

Mentored studio will be available after this class to continue practicing your new skills.

This class is a prerequisite for Clay 2, which is followed by Clay 3.

DESCRIPTION

If you’ve always wondered whether the world of glass art is for you, then this is your class!

No experience is required in this one day course where you will learn the basic techniques of Stained Glass copper foil method and leave with a beautiful piece of art.

Skill sets you will learn are how to score and break glass, grind, build to a pattern, apply copper foil, assemble, solder, patina, and polish. 

Upon completion of this class, you will have a completed a 6-10 piece project, and have learned the basic skills of copper foil and will move you toward future novice classes in either foil or lead.

All materials, hand tools and equipment are included. 

Safety: Closed toe shoes, safety glasses, and a sense of humour are mandatory. You may bring your own safety glasses, or they are available for use from the Centre. If you have an old pair of nicely fitting leather or heat resistant gloves, they will be useful, but not essential.

Hand strength and standing for parts of the class is required.

Spend a mindful morning making a 14', deer hide hand drum. Using traditional techniques you will stretch, string and tune your drum. Learn about the importance of the materials and the significance of the construction methods. Decorative elements like feathers and beads can be added to decorate your drum. This is a very good quality hide and frame that will last you forever. Be prepared for pow-wow season.

CLASS DESCRIPTION

From its obscure beginnings as an esoteric printmaking process using homemade gelatin sheets to its worldwide explosion in popularity, the gel plate (or gelli plate) has become ubiquitous and it’s easy to see why. Gel-plate mono-printing is a great introduction to printmaking; it’s beginner-friendly, versatile, and fun.

In this workshop we’ll focus on specific techniques like resists, stencils, transfers, and collage to create unique mono-prints using acrylic paints.

This 6-hour workshop is open to absolute beginners and to those who want to take their practice further. Participants will leave with a fundamental knowledge of mono-printing and a big stack of beautiful prints.

YOUR INSTRUCTORS

Leah Springate

Leah is a printmaker and book designer now living in Owen Sound. She graduated with honours from the Ontario College of Art where she specialized in Printmaking and Book Arts. After a 20-year career designing books at Penguin Random House Canada, she left to focus on producing her own work as co-proprietor of Mammoth Hall Press, a private printmaking and design studio.

She has worked in many printmaking media including linocut and woodcut, etching and drypoint, screen-printing, cyanotype, and letterpress. 

Her work is held internationally in public and private collections.

Paul Hunter is an artist, writer, and printmaker. He graduated with honours from the Ontario College of Art in Printmaking and Book Arts. He is also co-proprietor of Mammoth Hall Press which he started in 1990 with his wife, the artist and designer, Leah Springate. Their private presses’ prints and hand-made books have been exhibited across Canada and Japan. In 2021 they moved from Toronto and now make their home in Owen Sound, Ontario.

DESCRIPTION

Bring your painting or sewing skills to this fabric art quilt landscape class. Beginners are welcome even if you don't have sewing skills.

Students will dive in to our vast collection of textiles to 'paint' a spring landscape quilt. Using values and colours to represent the verdant colours of an emerging spring you will cut and piece together the elements of your landscape. The more detailed the better, think impressionist paintings. This is a great exercise for painters because it makes your choices more purposeful and encourages a palette of similar values to represent your subject.

The final step involves sewing down your landscape and mounting it on matte board.

Fran Cook is a long time fibre artist that has dabbled in many fabric disciplines. Her present practice focusses on art quilts like those being taught in this class.

Introduction to Sketching is a 4 session course designed to help you create and develop your own personal drawing style. You will be introduced to; drawing materials and their use, shading values, casting shadows, perspective and pencil techniques. Each day, Alan will introduce new and intriguing subjects for you to draw. Learn how to explore individual characteristics of objects and apply them in your sketchbook using various techniques. Clay 1 is a prerequisite. The ability to centre a pot and consistently throw a cylinder with intention is MANDATORY.

Clay 2 is a continuation of the Clay 1 introductory course where techniques will be expanded on.

Participants will be learning how to increase the size of their work while maintaining control of the clay. Bowl forms will be introduced. Techniques for refining and finishing vessels will help to increase the success rate of throwing. Trimming and glazing will be reintroduced and reinforced. Additions like handles will be included in level 2.

A maximum of 5 pieces will be saved and fired, additional pieces may be kept at a cost of $10/ piece.

These mentored studio classes are a great way to increase your sewing skills while pursuing self directed projects of your choice. Under the qualified tutelage of Patricia Campbell from Sydenham Sewing participants will meet each week in a friendly group to work on their own projects, encouraging each other and sharing their skills. Patricia will share her technical expertise with each person to ensure their projects progress and are finished successfully. In this environment you can increase your skills at a pace that is comfortable for you.

If you want to join a great sewing community and take advantage of GB Arts' fully equipped studio space with a wonderful teacher, then this is for you.

This class is not suitable for beginners you should already be familiar with sewing and sewing machines. This class will give you the opportunity to add skills that you need at a pace that works for you.

Patricia Campbell

In another life, Patricia was a full-time costumer for some of the big Canadian theatre companies, including the Canadian Stage Company, the Canadian Opera Company, Livent and Mirvish, where she made costumes for shows such as The Lion King, Phantom of the Opera, Ragtime and Mamma Mia. Since that time, she has been an instructor at Wilfrid Laurier University and the University of Waterloo. She has kept up her professional-level sewing skills over the years and is now the owner and operator of Sydenham Sewing and Alterations based in Chatsworth.

Megan Clelands classes are always good fun and she gets the best out of her students. Using a vast palette of wool roving colours you will needlefelt a seahorse or jellfish. Each participant can add their own twist to the figure ensuring their finished piece will have it's own individual charm.

This course is beginner friendly but also gives an experienced felter lots of room for exploration.

I suggest this class for painters because it forces the maker to spend more time with their colour choices and results in a more purposeful palette.

All materials are included, you will go home with the tools to continue your exploration of felting.

Megan Cleland is a self taught artist specializing in felted portraits, using wool and other animal fibres to create lifelike textured works. She began exploring felting ten years ago, drawn to the natural colours and richness of the medium. In 2023, Megan showcased her work at The Royal Winter Fair in Toronto, which led to gallery representation and increased public interest in her unique approach to fibre art.

This one day introductory class is for those who are absolute beginners. You will learn the very basics of throwing on the potter's wheel. This is a fun and quick way to introduce yourself to throwing on the wheel and find out if you would like to pursue a 5 week introductory course.
