Grab a friend and come in for a morning of snacks, coffee and handbuilding a personalized coffee mug.

This is a perfect combination of creativity and conversation. A low stakes relaxing class to get you out in the community doing something creative.

Annette is a wonderful sculptor and an equally great instructor. In this class you will learn to construct a 3D sculptural horse out of clay. The slab building method is used to create volume without added weight. You will be provided with templates for the form but the decoration and surface texture are up to you, be as creative as you like. Turn your horse into a candleholder, incense burner or a tabletop sculpture.


No experience necessary.

Participants will make a horse up to 10” x 10” x 3”

SALVAGED FABRIC - SPRING LANDSCAPE

DESCRIPTION


Bring your painting or sewing skills to this fabric art quilt landscape class. Beginners are welcome even if you don’t have sewing skills.

Students will dive in to our vast collection of textiles to ‘paint’ a spring landscape quilt. Using values and colours to represent the verdant colours of an emerging spring you will cut and piece together the elements of your landscape. The more detailed the better, think impressionist paintings. This is a great exercise for painters because it makes your choices more purposeful and encourages a palette of similar values to represent your subject.

The final step involves sewing down your landscape and mounting it on matte board.


YOUR TUTOR


Fran Cook is a long time fibre artist that has dabbled in many fabric disciplines. Her present practice focusses on art quilts like those being taught in this class.

These mentored studio classes are a great way to increase your sewing skills while pursuing self directed projects of your choice. Under the qualified tutelage of Patricia Campbell from Sydenham Sewing participants will meet each week in a friendly group to work on their own projects, encouraging each other and sharing their skills. Patricia will give technical expertise to each person to ensure their projects progress and are finished successfully. In this environment you can increase your skills at a pace that is comfortable for you.

If you want to join a great sewing community and take advantage of GB Arts’ fully equipped studio space with a wonderful teacher, then this is for you.


This class is not suitable for beginners you should already be familiar with sewing and sewing machines. This class will give you the opportunity to add skills that you need at a pace that works for you.

This is an ongoing class and spaces are limited so sign up early.

In another life, Patricia was a full-time costumer for some of the big Canadian theatre companies, including the Canadian Stage Company, the Canadian Opera Company, Livent and Mirvish, where she made costumes for shows such as The Lion KingPhantom of the OperaRagtime and Mamma Mia. Since that time, she has been an instructor at Wilfrid Laurier University and the University of Waterloo. She has kept up her professional-level sewing skills over the years and is now the owner and operator of Sydenham Sewing and Alterations based in Chatsworth.

This one day introductory class is for those who are absolute beginners. You will learn the very basics of throwing on the potter’s wheel. CYANOTYPE PRINTING ON FABRIC AND PAPER

DESCRIPTION

Join us a a fun, 3-hour workshop where you’ll explore the art of Cyanotype, one of the earliest forms of photography using sunlight, water, and nature. Cyanotype photography doesn’t use a camera. Instead, you lay an object on paper coated with a special solution before exposing it to UV light (like sunlight) and washing with water. 


In this workshop you’ll learn the basics of cyanotype printing and create stunning, blue-and-white prints using a variety of elements on paper and fabric.


Participants will create their own personalized cyanotypes and will leave with the skills and knowledge to continue experimenting with this fascinating medium.

Leah is a printmaker and book designer now living in Owen Sound. She graduated with honours from the Ontario College of Art where she specialized in Printmaking and Book Arts. After a 20-year career designing books at Penguin Random House Canada, she left to focus on producing her own work as co-proprietor of Mammoth Hall Press, a private printmaking and design studio.


She has worked in many printmaking media including linocut and woodcut, etching and drypoint, screen-printing, cyanotype, and letterpress. 


Her work is held internationally in public and private collections.

POTTERY MENTORED STUDIO

DESCRIPTION


These mentored studio classes provides you with a supportive environment to continue to hone your skills. An experienced instructor will provide personalized instruction to help you gain confidence in throwing on the wheel.


For clay 1 non-member participants, these classes will allow you practice the skills you have learned and to improve your control of cylinder construction. Trimming and decoration can be done within your skill set. There will be a once monthly glazing session for you to finish off your pieces. Clay is purchased separately and you will be responsible for the reclaiming and management of your clay. This is a way to keep improving before you take clay 2/3.


For members this is an opportunity for you to receive help with sticking points in your throwing technique and to work on throwing larger vessels and explore different shapes. Glazing improvement and simple additions and alterations can be worked on.


Requirement: You must have completed Clay 1 at GB Arts or you are currently a Studio Member in order to participate in this class.

LEVEL 1 CLAY - 5 SESSIONS

DESCRIPTION

This 5-session course will start you on your journey to becoming a potter! You will learn clay preparation, tools, centering clay, opening a vessel, control of the clay on the wheel, and basic finishing of your piece. This course will reinforce these basic skills with the aim to throw a perfect cylinder, which is the beginning of most wheel projects. Good studio practices and a solid technique will give a firm grasp of throwing on the wheel.


A maximum of 5 pieces will be saved and fired. Extra pieces can be kept for an additional fee.


Mentored studio will be available after this class to continue practicing your new skills.

This class is a prerequisite for Clay 2.

LEADED GARDEN STAKE - STAINED GLASS NOVICE

In this half day novice class, you will experience a taste of the traditional art of leaded glass while creating a stunning Garden Stake of your own colour and design.

This course will cover the steps and concepts of utilising lead came in your stained glass project. You will learn how to stretch and cut lead came, solder within a zinc frame, and continue to improve your skills in scoring and cutting glass.

Upon completion of this class, you will have a beautiful piece of art to adorn a garden or planter. Your finished project will measure approximately 24” x 3.5”.

REQUIREMENT

Must have experience in successfully scoring and breaking glass, grinding to a pattern, foiling ,and soldering. All materials are included as well as the use of our hand tools, grinders, and safety glasses.

Megan Cleland is a self taught artist specializing in felted portraits, using wool and other animal fibres to create lifelike textured works. She began exploring felting ten years ago, drawn to the natural colours and richness of the medium. In 2023, Megan showcased her work at The Royal Winter Fair in Toronto, which led to gallery representation and increased public interest in her unique approach to fibre art.

KIDS SUMMER CAMP - CLAY AND SCULPTURE

Sculptors are the engineers of the art world. Working with a broad range of materials campers will construct large scale artworks. Think robot prosthetics and kinetic mobiles. Problem solving, applied forces and aesthetic considerations will drive your childs creative impulses during this week. Get ready to be blown away with the projects for this camp.


This dual focus camp also includes clay which is a sculptural medium as well. Participants will experience throwing clay on the wheel and handbuilding clay in various ways. Surface decoration and carving techniques will allow your child to develop an individual style for their pottery.


With singalongs, play breaks, movie time and kid friendly lunches, this will be a fun and creative experience for your child. Friday afternoon will feature a time for a parents/guardians showcase where your children can proudly display their work and introduce you to their tools and workspaces that they used all week.


LUNCH IS INCLUDED!


You will be sent a field trip form to read, sign, and return before camp starts.

Paper and lino will be available for purchase.

We are privileged to live in a region with an abundance of fresh water lakes and the beautiful great lakes. Depicting water and shorelines in your paintings is a skill every painter needs.

In this class you will learn how to represent water and shorelines in a way that speaks to the quiet and calm of still water or the excitement of waves. Reflection and light will also be addressed to give your work a realistic quality.

Exercises in the morning will culminate in a painting of a local waterway in the afterrnoon.

Reference material of local landmarks and streetscapes will be provided

Raised in rural Ontario, Kim moved to Toronto to attend the Ontario College of Art and Design and stayed. Recently re-locating from Toronto to Owen Sound, Kim’s fascination with the colours and textures of the world has kept her and her brush wandering.

Kim is a frequent exhibitor in group shows in Toronto, Ontario; Saint John, New Brunswick; New York City, New York; Palm Desert, California; as well as numerous other locations.
